Support your local boutique

We are officially out of the recession, so Brian Lenihan is telling us but I wonder how the shops are taking this particular piece of news? Time will tell soon when the Christmas frenzy is over and things have settled down after the sales. It must be really tough wondering what to buy for next year especially in the fickle market of fashion. I say let's support our local boutique. My local boutique is Malahide and I would find it difficult to pick just one because they are all pretty unique in their own way. Now I am addicted anyway when it comes to style but there's something about the smaller, more local boutiques that beats the large departments hands down every time.Maybe it's the friendly service, or the fact that they know you and know just what you like? They are on first name terms with you and you always feel welcome when you enter the shop. As a personal Shopper I'm constantly recommending boutiques to people, one of my favourites is Bibas in Malahide, for all the forementioned reasons.Biba's is choc full of the most wonderful style for Wedding gear, specialising in mother of bride and Groom. A must for a visit. You will be helped and given as much time as you need to choose that oh so special outfit. You will never be forced into buying anything you are not completely comfortable with. Bliss boutique is an aladdins cave of fabulous acceasories, their uniqueness is that they customise whatever it is you choose, whether it's a quirky fascinator, sparkly shoes or a bag to die for then this is the place to be. I intend visiting all our local boutiques over the coming weeks and will be reporting back.Where is YOUR local boutique? Why not visit them, let them really get to know you and I think you will be in for a very pleasant surprise.

let´s get real!

Having pondered a bit on my last blog I´ve come to the realisation that we´re being sold a whole heap of lies! I don´t believe there is a single product out there that will do as it promises, absolutely nothing that remove wrinkles once they are in place. The same goes for eye bags, lip lines and anything else you care to mention. However, if, and this really IS a big IF you have found somethig that does what it says on the tin (sic) then let me know asap and it will get a mention soon (cant divulge yet)! I hate my little ziz zaggy going everywhere lip lines and have tried everything to get rid of the critters but they aint budging. So it´s over to you now. But only something that has definitely worked. Promise? A very merry Christmas.

Altered Images

Have you been reading all the hype about Twiggy and 'those' touched up photos? God she looked fantastic in them and I must admit I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I realised they had been altered. It seems airbrushing is the order of the day.Who's real anymore? It's time to stop the kidding and admit the little pot of cream might make you feel better but no more than that. Who in Gods name can have wrinkle free skin at 60! It's just not possible unless you resort to either botox or knife and I for one am going nowhere near either one. I love my creams and believe every promise they make until I've used them for the compulsary 30 days and nothing has changed, same old same old!If you saw my make up box with all the half used bottles/jars you'd tell me to get my head tested. Every time I try something new I promise myself 'never again', then along comes Clarins/Estee/whoever with their false promises for all these Nasa tested wonder creams and I'm seduced all over again. Pathetic! I recently had a bit of dry skin on my face and you know what cleared it up? E45! I'm also a great fan of Nivea, in face in a former life with 'Open House' it regularly won hands down when we had products blind tested. But I digress, back to ageing, Joan Collins recently said she refuses to have her photos airbrushed. Good on her! She looks pretty damn good for a lady in her 70's. One of my all time favourites is Honor Blackman, she's absolutely fab, and she's 80. So let's hear it for all the girls who are embracing age with dignity, the wrinkles are real whether we like them or not, and if your pals love you they love you for who you are not how taut you skin is!

Are you one of those ladies who must have the latest trend or do you like to stay individual and adapt trends to suit your lifestyle, budget and personality? My stylish friends would never dress head to toe in either labels or faddy fashion. Style is all about understanding and knowing yourself and enjoying clothes. I was watching Gok Wan doing his 'celebrity wardrobe' item the other night and every one of them had a closet laden with labels. Are they just too lazy to go to the high street anymore or are they deluded enough to think that spending a fortune must mean better quality? We all know that's not true. I have been disappointed on numerous occasions with the poor quality and fabrics of these 'must have' designers. Shabby finish, pulled threads and cheap buttons etc. etc.
My advice is always to buy the best you can afford in key items like coats, jackets, and the wardrobe basics. If it's a bit of fun you want and something that's probably only going to last a season anyway then you can't beat the likes of H@M, Penneys, Dunnes, Mango, Dorothy Perkins, Topshop,Next. You'll be bang up to date without breaking the bank.
Right now I'm loving the treggings especially the 'stirrup' ones, we all wore this fashion when I was a teenager so maybe it's just nostalgia but I love it and think it's far more cozy and comfortable than tights for the winter.
So whatever you go for this winter be sure to shop around and most of all have fun!

Sales savvy!

Savvy sales
shopping

We’re all guilty of buying clothes that we will
never wear just because the price tag is attractive.

The blitz is on, ladies, and it’s your
chance to grab some bargains now that
the the party season is upon us. But think
carefully before you lose the run of yourself and
buy the wrong styles just because ‘they are such
a bargain’.

I adore shopping. I could shop for Ireland.
The minute the sales start I’m out there. However
I’ve made so many mistakes over the years and
collected so many ‘orphans’ (clothes that went
with nothing else) that I really had to rethink my
strategy and learn to shop smarter. After all who
needs more wardrobe clutter?

So before you whip yourself into a shopping
frenzy and start burning up the bit of plastic
here are a few tips:

1. Look at what you have in your wardrobe.
Only buy something that will fit in with your
existing clothes, in fact as a general rule I suggest
you only ever buy something that will go with
three items you already have.

2. When trying on clothes make sure they fit
perfectly, if you’re tugging and pulling at them
to make them sit right or fit more comfortably
then put them back on the hangar and leave
them there. They will not fit you any better
when you get home.

3. Does the colour suit you? Be aware that some
colours might look great under artificial lighting
but could end up making you look drained in
natural light.

4. Ask yourself if you need it? How many more
pairs of black trousers or white shirts do you
need? Work out your plan before you go shopping.
A bargain is only a bargain if you need it
and will wear it.

5. What about the fabric? Can you wash it or is
it dry clean only. If you have to bring it to the
cleaners after every wear then it’s false economy.

6. Can you really afford it? By this I mean will
you be paying cash for it or will you just be adding
more on to the credit card. Is it worth that?
If the only reason you are buying something is that it’s drastically
reduced then I suggest leaving it there.

Always examine something before you purchase
and ask yourself if you would be prepared
to pay the full price for it. If not, why? Are you
only buying for the label? You know you can’t
wear the label on the outside of your clothes so
unless it makes you look good and feel great,
then desist. Only buy it if you really love it!

If you’re unsure about something take time
to think about it - if it’s the last item in your size
ask the shop if they will hold it for you while you
decide. If you find yourself thinking about it a
lot then it’s probably a good buy.

Because she’s worth it

I’m constantly learning from my clients. One
young lady I met last week told me she prefers
to save for something that excites her rather than
endlessly purchasing ‘it’s ok’ items. She showed
me a tiny Valentino bag that was to die for. She
had watched it for ages and delayed the gratification
until she had saved the €1,000 to afford it.
Yes, girls, you’re reading it right - €1,000.

In a million years I could never justify that
kind of spending but then again if I added up
all my bargain and impulse buys they would
amount to a sizable sum that would have let me
afford an exclusive coat, handbag, etc.

But she has a point. I once tried on a pair
of shoes that made me feel absolutely wonderful
but on checking the price I nearly choked!
They were €400, so I walked away, unsatisfied.
How could I possibly justify spending €400 on
one pair of shoes? My late mother’s words were
ringing in my ears: ‘Who do you think you are,
Joe Mc Grath?’ Said gentleman was a millionaire
in Kildare where I grew up and this phrase
was quoted on a regular basis by mothers who
thought their offspring were losing the run of
themselves. Old habits die hard!

Later on the same day I totally compromised
myself by buying two pairs of ‘nice’ shoes for €80
each. If you find yourself in a similar situation -
trying to decide between something that makes
you feel fantastic and something that makes you
feel ‘nice’ - ask yourself which item you will get
more wear out of.

The lady is a vamp

Before I finish I thought I should mention a
fantastic workshop we had recently where we
ran a session on ideas for revamping your existing
wardrobe. We had clothes that were dyed,
shoes that were dyed, clothes with new buttons
added, nets added to skirts, corsages stitched on
tops, and hundreds of ideas were shared on how
to layer, and wear clothes differently. We even
ended up with a little sale when people bought
other people’s mistakes. After all one man’s meat
is another man’s poison. A great day was had by
all. I will look at some of these revamping ideas
over the coming months.

Fashion life after 40!

Is there a fashion life after 40?

Why are designers and high street shops only interested in the skinny 20 something year old. Have we 40, 50 year and 60 year olds no spending power and no interest in style and fashion? Of course we have. Just because the body may have gone past it’s ‘best by’ date don’t we love to know what’s ‘in’. Even though pregnancies and maybe even menopause will have contributed to thickened waistlines and fuller stomachs you can still look and feel fabulous. None of my friends have yet succumbed to the elasticated waists or mumsy hairstyles. They all love to look stylish and up to date irrespective of the number of candles they blow out each year.
So what do you do to stay looking good?
Well start by investing in some good foundation garments. Any of us older than 45 or 50 will remember the dreaded roll on. I think this is the main reason that women of this particular age cry ‘absolutely not’ when it comes to magic knickers. Don’t! They are the greatest bit of undie engineering ever, not sexy I grant you but boy do they suck you in. In fact you won’t even know you’re wearing support. I promise! And the best thing is they come in every shape and size and are designed for each body flaw, stomach, hips, spare tyre etc . Whatever your problem is there is a magic solution. Next is the bra. Do you know that more than 80% of women wear the wrong size bra ?. When were you last fitted? If you answer ‘never’ you’re not alone, I know loads of women who are still wearing the same bra size for the past 30 years or so. Marks and Spencers offer a great service and will even bring you in styles to try on in the dressing room. Please do this though. You will be amazed at the difference a good correctly fitting bra makes.
Next, have a good look at your upper arms. Are they flabby? This unfortunately is a common problem after about 45 and nothing seem to work. I’ve tried everything, from arm lifting with bean tins to pinching the fat to break it up, it didn’t work. They still jiggle away and the only thing to do is cover up. It’s no big deal as I adore wraps, pashminas, and nice knits. The boobs have a mind of their own too so I just hoick them a bit higher. One of the biggest sins of ageing is a sagging bust. Try tightening the straps a bit and you might look 10 years younger. Promise! If you still have a good neck wear some fabulous neckpieces. There is the most amazing range of jewellery out there right now. Accessories can instantly update an outfit. You don’t even have to spend a lot. There’s something to suit every pocket. Your local boutiques will have a fab range and will even help you with accessorising that special outfit . If you are lucky enough to have a shapely waist flaunt it with a gorgeous belt. The latest ones just in are skinny belts. If the waist is fairly non existent but the hips are good then drop the belt to below the waist. This is a great way of lengthening the body. It’s an illusion but it works!
How about the legs? There’s a skirt length just right for every woman. Here’s an easy way to find your perfect length. Stand in front of a mirror with a towel. Move it up and down until it hits the part of your leg that looks the slimmest. Avoid skirts cutting across the widest part of the calf, you will look fatter. Either go above or below the widest bit and then measure the distance from the floor. This is a great guideline when buying skirts in future. And dare I say it, keep the knees covered, usually not a pretty sight as we age. They dimple and sag just like all the other bits.
For all you ladies who are carrying a bit of extra weight why not buy some beautiful shoes and bags. This is where you can really score points.
What you need to do is simply take the attention away from the bits you don’t like and draw the focus to the parts you love. Easy isn’t it?
Coco Chanel once said we get the face we deserve…or something like that. You get my drift. Love who you are and the body you have right now! Treat yourself to something nice. Go on, you’re worth it!

How are the funds this Christmas?

Are you skinted or minted this Christmas?

Can you believe it’s on top of us again, don’t know about you but I certainly will be watching the budget this Christmas. Was it only 2 years ago that we splashed out obscene amounts on just about anything we fancied? Still no matter how broke we are it always seems hugely important to celebrate with our loved ones, whether it’s cheap and cheerful or blow the budget gifts you will get sucked in by the advertising, jingles and shop windows and the spirit of generosity will prevail. Time enough to worry in January! It reminds me of being away on holidays when invariably I overspend with a ‘what the hell’ attitude until I come home and face the music, or to be more precise the credit card bills!
For some of us Christmas is the most joyful occasion, lots of time to spend with family and friends, parties, new clothes, and the hope of some gorgeous presents. Yet for every one of you who totally loves this time of year there are others who detest and loathe it. I must admit I’m not one bit sorry that at last we have waved farewell to the excessive spending and all the over the top nonsense that typified the last number of years. It really should be far more about the fun of spending time together, eating (and drinking) too much than seeing how many presents are shoved under the tree.
Can you really do it on a shoestring though? I honestly believe you can and here are just a few ideas to get you started:
* Plan
Decide how much you plan to spend. List the names of people getting gifts, and what you might get them. Then roughly decide how much you plan to spend on each.
* Check out sales early.
Gone are the days when sales only occurred in January and June. Now you can find sales on in practically every store year round.
* Always ask for a discount.
I do this no matter where I shop. It’s amazing the number of times you will get another 10% off just by asking ‘can you do better’?
* Get creative
Make your own gifts. Bake some cakes or biscuits, sure to be appreciated.
* Give your time
This can be one of the nicest things you can do. An offer to cook dinner, babysit, mind the dog, the list is endless but it can be such a personal gift. My sister had a ‘big’ birthday recently and her friend Kay called around early in the morning armed with smoked salmon, eggs, champagne, and loads of goodies to cook breakfast for all of us. I thought it was the nicest idea. (and no, we didn’t drink the champagne!)
* Kris Kindle
Instead of buying individual presents for the family everyone agrees on a fixed amount to put into the pot. Then each person picks the name of the one they buy a present for. This means each person gets one good present instead of loads of tacky cheap ones. Works great!
* Wrap it up
Buy some bows and ribbons to decorate. Take time wrapping.Don’t you just love to see a gorgeous gift lovingly presented.

Now that that’s out of the way …what to wear! It’s the one time of year we all crave for something new, even if it’s just for the day. If you really are watching the few bob then I suggest you go to your wardrobe and pull out some of the clothes you already have. How can you accessorise them? This year it’s all about corsages, they come in pretty much every colour and will instantly glam up the simplest dress or cardigan. So will a fab belt.
Have you been watching X Factor? If you have then you will have seen the amazing headpieces that Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue have been wearing. I think they are stunning and am busy trying to source them. You will definitely get similar ones in River Island but check local boutiques as these will be a big hit this Christmas.
Buy for your shape. No matter how fantastic the dress looks on your pal forget it, leave it there, unless your shape is identical to hers it will not look the same on you!
Get yourself a bit of glitz! Sequins are so on trend, as is velvet. If you have either then you will be bang up to date.
Most of all enjoy yourselves. If someone else is cooking dinner then put the feet up and make the most of it. You deserve every bit of pampering you get.
Have a great Christmas!

Girlfriends

Girlfriends

Someone will always be prettier,
They will always be smarter,
Their house will be bigger,
They will drive a better car,
Their children will do better at school,
And their husband will fix more things around the house.
So let it go,
And love you and your circumstances.
Think about it.
The prettiest woman in the world can have hell in her heart,
And the most highly favoured woman on your job
May be unable to have children,
And the richest woman you know,
who’s got the car, the house, the clothes…might be lonely,
And The Word says “If I have not love I am nothing”.
So, again, love you.
Love who you are.
Look in the mirror and smile and say
“I am too blessed to be stressed and too anointed to be disappointed”
“Winners make things happen,
Losers let things happen”
Be Blessed ladies and pass this on to encourage another woman.
“To the world you might be one person,
but to one person you just might be the world”.

How are you doing the trends?

What’s hot and what’s not!

Style magazines are so full of trends these days. My particular “visual candy” favourites are ‘In Style’ and Grazia. I used to love ‘Oprah’ but it’s hard to justify spending more than €7 on a magazine at the moment. I love bringing my magazines home and curling up at the fire for a good old read. Mind you there’s not an awful lot of reading in them, especially the fashion ones so I tend to get through them fairly smartly. Still reading is my big pleasure so I will never deprive myself of my style guides.

Right now ‘they’ are telling us that sequins, studs, big sleeves, and glitter will be massive this Christmas. "Oh I just couldn’t do that trend” I hear you say…well I say go for it! Every woman should have her bit of glitter for Christmas. Of course a lot depends on your age. The older you get the more you need to ‘tone down’ on the trends.

I love when the new trends come out but let’s face it , there are a few dodgy things to avoid if you’re past the first flush of youth! Mini-skirts for example are not a good look with knobbly knees. Also watch how you wear your leggings, make sure you wear them with dresses, or long tops unless you’re in your 20’s/30’, otherwise you will look like you forgot to put on your bottoms. Sooo not a good look!

The trends may be very funky this winter but gather your style wits about you and think about how you will interpret them. Which particular trends resonate with your personality?! If you incorporate maybe one or two into your outfits you will look fab. Enjoy!

How cluttered is your wardrobe?

I was doing a wardrobe declutter last week and couldn’t believe the huge amount of clothes this lady had .Now while I know all the ‘rules’ I am not great myself on keeping the old closet organized though I must admit to being ruthless when it comes to ‘getting rid’! This lady had clothes in there with labels still swinging on them. Unfortunately most of them were now well past their sell by date and were going nowhere except possibly the nearest charity shop. Tragic! My mantra girls is’ the more it cost the more you should be wearing it’! If I had a cent for the number of times women have said to me something is ‘too good’ to wear I’d honestly be rich. Too good for WHAT? The massively expensive outfit will be gone out of date before it’s worn 4 or 5 times. Shame! Little exercise…Go to your wardrobe and take down the most expensive items there then count how many times you’ve worn them. What are you prepared to do about it? Would some alterations make them more wearable? If so get cracking and do something about it. You deserve to be feeling great every day!

So many shoes so little time!

So many shoes so little time!

Aren’t the shoes out there just amazing right now? I can’t seem to stop buying them The most fantastic thing about shoes is that your feet don’t have ‘fat’ days so even at your worst you can slip into a fabulous pair and feel pretty goddam good. I bought some seriously gorgeous ones last week, all black suede and studs. Bit trampy but who cares, I looove them! Can you believe that some women only buy shoes when they need them? Life wouldn’t be worth living if I had to live like that. I’m also blessed with a hardy pair of feet so can shop anywhere, it can be Office one day and Penneys the next. God I’m such a lucky girl! Ther’s nothing quite like a pair of great shoes to get attention and help you feel utterly wonderfully fabulous!

Are we going too far with our casual dressing? ..read on

Was personal shopping this week and again I was amazed at the casual attitude people have to dressing. Now I certainly don’t want to appear ageist but nearly every young person I saw just looked plain sloppy. Have we gone a bit over the top with casual dressing? When I look at photographs of women taken in the 40’s and 50’s the one thing that strikes me every time is how stylish they looked. Attention to detail was paramount. They wore hats and gloves and carried handbags elegantly on their arms. I love it. Think Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly and you’re thinking style. Ahh what glamour. Is it that we’re just too busy today and just couldn’t be bothered? Yet every day you get up you have to dress yourself. Why not think about the impression you’re creating by what you’re wearing (or not)! So girls, give a little bit more thought tomorrow to what you

Put on

What kind of packer are you?

Travelling light

How is it that some people can bring a tiny carry on bag with them on holidays and manage to look fantastic every day/night with a seemingly endless number of outfits while others haul through the airport with bulging suitcases and yet never have the ‘right’ clothes when they arrive at their destination. Which one are you? I regularly help clients plan and pack for their trips. I developed a wardrobe plan for myself which I swear by and now wouldn’t go anywhere without it. Like any plan it may seem a bit tedious as it involves writing down every item of clothing you intend to bring, including accessories. By writing it down you will put outfits together. I also advise sticking to certain colours so that everything mixes and matches. By figuring it out beforehand and sticking to your plan you will only bring the amount you actually need. My fella always brings far more than he could ever wear, even going so far as to pack a suit, just in case there’s a funeral!! Did you ever! It’s amazing how great you feel when you plan beforehand and get to actually wear everything you brought. Sure a girl needs to have a bit of space left for the bits and bobs she buys.

What I couldn't live without!

Style with Maggie Blog

I was having lunch with some style pals the other day and we got chatting about ageing, makeovers, beauty products etc. etc. Anyway it led us to wondering what each felt was the most important thing to get right to ensure you look your best at all times. We all agreed that number one was hair. Without exception we felt that if the hair is not right we feel pretty lousy. Isn’t a good cut so important? My God if my hair isn’t right I don’t want to answer the door! Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my lippy, somehow since the ‘M’ happened I swear my lips changed shape, and they need more definition than in the past, add to that the fact that my lipstick bleeds into little cracks I need to use an anti feathering stick. What a girl does in the name of vanity! So, what 2 products could you not live without? And what do you think is the most essential ingredient of good grooming. Think about it !

Enough of this stripping!

I don't know what you think but I'm getting pretty tired of all the stripping that's going on right now, I'm thinking particularly of 'Off the rails'. It all began with Gok Wan and was a novelty at first, the idea was that someone with extremely low self esteem and disgust/loathing of their body would get a 'Gokover'. At first we all loved him as he was so empathetic with these women and a pleasant change from the other two ( Trinny and Susannah) who tore underwear off and generally insulted all and sundry. Gok praised women, extolling the beauty of their bum/thighs/hips whatever it was they particularly disliked. Anyway it usually ended with the ladies coming out on the catwalk strutting their stuff proudly and loving their body. Come on, give us a break! Since when did a stroll down the catwalk and a look in the mirror (shared with hundreds of thousands) become the fixit for self loathing? Now I declare 'Off the Rails' have taken this idea and off we go again trying to convince some poor unfortunates they really have the perfect body. Makes me so mad! And don't think for one minute that putting them in a row with similarly shaped women is going to make any difference either, sure every woman's proportion is totally unique so it's not even a true reflection of size or shape. This obsession with 15 minutes of fame is going crazy. I'd just love to revisit those women after the cameras switch off, Gok/Brendan has moved on to his next project and the producers are clapping themselves on the back thinking 'great show'!
If you are not happy with your body don't think for one second that standing in front of a mirror with Gok or Brendan will change anything. Instead spend time with people who love you for who you are and treat yourself to something nice.

Style night Ballymena

Had a fab time last night in Ballymena. The ladies were wonderful, all 35 of them. Like every other Style night they were all mad to get their colours 'done'. While I would never claim it to be an exact science it's always a revelation to see them glow in the seasonal palette that suits them best. We also did body shapes of course and again Libis from Ultimate came up trumps with clothes for the night and 20% off vouchers for anyone who buys in her boutique before 6th November. I'd say the ladies will be scurrying in to her 'cos the clothes were gorgeous, all regal purples, indigo blues, and warm reds. The ruffles played their part also. There was modelling to beat the band! Great fun altogether. There's nothing better that a gang of womwn together to laugh, and generally ahve a load of fun.
Next one booked November. Bring it on!

Develop your own unique style

Have you ever thought you'd love to create a whole new style for yourself, get out of that predictable rut? me too, I think all women feel like this every so often. What holds us back though? Sometimes it's because we just dont know where to start and then at other times it's because we've been 'boxed' in a particular category by family and friends and we dare not leave it! Sad isn't it that our sense of style is so cramped, it's far easier to take the easy option and stay within our comfort zone.
Well today girls I'd like to help you start develop a signature style, one that's all your own! You will be focusing on yourself but it will be so worth it when you start reinventing the clothes you already have as well as making clever additions by way of accessories. So a couple of questions to get you going:
1. How would you describe your body shape? Knowing where you put on weight is ofter key to answering this. What shapes look best on you?
2. How has your wardrobe changed over the years. Are you stuck in a style rut? Are clothes just a functional necessity or do you get immense pleasure from every purchase?
3. What is your lifestyle right now. Has it changed recently? Does your wardrobe reflect thes changes or are you still buying the same type clothes.Make a list of the events you need clothes for (even stay at home)and see where the gaps are.

The answers you give to thes questions will be hugely insightful. Once you have done this you will begin to understand why you have made mistakes, but more importantly you need never again say 'help...I've nothing to wear'!

The more it cost the more you should be wearing it!

Ever notice how something you bought that cost hardly anything gets worn to death yet something you paid a fortune for is left hanging there because 'it's too good'?Let's get real girls we're in a recession and can't afford the luxuries of orphans in the wardrobe anymore. By this I mean clothes that are never taken out, some (shock, horror) may even have the tags still on them. Shame on you, me and every other woman guilty of this. The day is gone when we indulged just because we felt like it. It's time to think smarter and re work that wordrobe of yours. The average woman wears 20% of her clothes 80% of the time so at any given time there's a lot of dosh tied up in there. Then if you work out the cost per wear you may be very unpleasantly surprised. To do this divide the cost by the number of times you wore something. So that hugely expensive rig you bought for a wedding and wore only once has not been a good buy. Then again something you've got endless wear out of ends up 'costing nothing' because of the value you got.So take a good look into your wardrobe and see how often you wear the most expensive items there. Why are you not wearing them? Girls they will go out of date if left there so make the most of them now. Every day we get is a good day so nothing is too good for you to enjoy today. Start having fun reinventing what you have, get a few pals in , open a bottle of plonk and have a girlie dress up night. The main thing is have fun!

Understanding your body shape

You know girls this is the key to looking really stylish. You know all the times it went wrong for you because you bought something that looked fab on your pal yet did nothing for you, in fact it was a total mistake? Well of course it was, likely her body shape is different to yours. Learn the secret of dressing for your shape and avoid costly mistakes in future.I am short/high waisted with a short body.I also have a non existant waist. My legs are fairly long (good bit). My style challenge is to look taller by elongating the body and creating the illusion of a waist..
How to do this:
1. I avoid belts around the middle, best way for my shape is to wear them on the hip. This visually lengthens the torso.
2. I create vertical lines with v necks, long scarves, and long jewellery.
3. I never tuck in shirts, this would make me look like a sack tied in the middle.Instead wear them over your trousers with belt around the hips.
4. Find a dress that flatters your shape. The wrap dress is wonderful as long as there is no seam running around the waist.Better for the short waisted woman to have it tying under the bust as this is actually the narrowest part of the body.Again illusion! Try on different style until you find your perfect dress.
Well that's my shape girls but I will be writing about yours soon.

Big shoulders everywhere!

For any of us who remember the 80's then big shoulders was THE fashion statement of that decade. Dynasty and Dallas spring particularly to mind because the shoulders were so wide they'd nearly knock the eyes out of anyone who came too close. Well they're back girls, this time more subtle and I have to say it's a trend I like because they give definition and sharpen the silhouette. For anyone with sloping/rounded shoulders they balance the overall shape. It's said if you wait long enough everything comes back in fashion but I didn't really see this one coming on so fast.Iv'e noticed sequins on jumpers and dresses (on the shoulders) so this brings in another hugely popular trend. In face sequins are on everything too. If you feel you're too old or simply not interested in doing the whole sequin dress thing then I suggest buying yourself a little clutch or getting a belt. That way you can give a nod to the fashion trends. Mainly have fun!

Are we saying goodbye to size 0 models?

Hurrah for designer Mark Fast who used size 10 and 12 models to show his clothes at London Fashion Week. Despite a walkout by some of his employees he stuck to his guns and went ahead. The result was hugely successful and paid off. His attitude is that he wants the world to know that 'larger' sizes look just as good if not better than their skinny conuterparts. Isn't it about time fashion designers followed suit and let real women show their designs. What's attractive about a fab dress hanging off a stick thin body? Maybe it's been a case of the Emperors new clothes for too long and things are about to change? We will keep an eye on this one.

6 things you can do just for you!

The kids are back to school and you're on the treadmill again so it's time to get back a bit of 'me' time girls. Style gets placed on the back burner while you run yourself ragged for kids and significant other. So I'm going to suggest 6 things which will get you feeling good about yourself again.
1. Get comfortable with your body.
I bet you could instantly rhyme of all the things you dislike/hate about your body but now I want you to take a long hard look at yourself. Hoe are the legs, ankles, shoulders, eyes? any part of yourself that you like. Remember girls there is no such thing as the perfect body so for now please take time to think about the parts you love and think about highlighting them.
2. Create a 'mood board'.
You wouldn't dream of putting in a new kitchen or bathroom without pulling out pictures from every magazine in sight. Well make 'you' your next project. Put a bit of time aside and pull out images that attract you, it may be colour, shape or style. Study them and figure out what it is about them you admire. Then place them somewhere convenient for inspiration. Make lists and bring them with you when you go shopping. Don't leave something you desire between the pages of a magazine.
3. Get yourself a great new hairstyle. This can instantly knock 10 years off you visually.
4. Find yourself a 'wow' piece. This can be anything from a piece of jewelley to a fab pair of shoes. The main thing is that you treat yourself to something. It needn't be expensive though if it is so what! to quote L'Oreal 'you're worth it!
5. Get youself some fab underwear. Consign anything greyed/saggy to the knicker crematorium. It's the most fantastic feeling to wear something luxurious under you clothes.
6. De clutter your wardrobe, you wont want to start but I promise you will be on top of the world when you do it. Everythig will be readily accessible, and there will only be items in there that you will wear. never again will you say 'I've nothing to wear!
